The objective of my exhibition is to display the relationship mankind has with nature and the idea of appreciation. I explored themes of destruction, technological advance, and beauty of nature in order to express the idea that mankind has been slowly destroying nature and the message of saving nature by revealing its beauty. The artworks focus on my experiences and connections with nature that make me strive to act and communicate this to my audience.
I arranged my artworks from the destructive and negative aspects of nature to a more positive and optimistic aspect of nature. Starting from the left, the artworks reveal how technological advancements have a negative impact on nature and reveal the idea of artificial nature. The center artwork reveals people’s change in perception of nature and how they believe they should do something to save nature. The artworks towards the right highlight the blessings that nature gives to its people. There is now a more soothing and relaxing atmosphere eluded by the artworks.
The left side of my exhibition holds the artworks, “Artificial Nature” and “Strolling on the Street.” These two pieces represent the pessimistic atmosphere in which nature is portrayed. Both pieces symbolize destruction, one through mankind while the other through nature itself. “Artificial Nature” shows how nature will eventually be taken over through technological advancements as the trees in the museum are portrayed through technology. For “Strolling on the Street,” this is the view from a person in which a storm causes a tree to fall down and lean against a house. It shows the coexistence of destruction in nature and mankind destroying nature. The power is balanced.
A neutral perspective on nature is shown in the center of the exhibition. These pieces include “Escaping Isolation,” “Mood,” and “Night out in New York.” All these pieces reveal a more nonchalant attitude of nature or the idea that while people haven’t found beauty in nature, they aren’t disliking or destroying nature either. In “Escaping Isolation,” there is a clear disconnection between mankind and nature through the bars which show solitude. While in solitude, people can consider what nature has to offer them. In “Mood,” it highlights the idea of consideration by standing on the bridge and looking out into the lake. It showcases a normal day which people often neglect to stop and watch the view around them. In “Night out in New York,” it presents a gradual shift to a more positive view. People come to understand that they can live side to side with nature instead of dominating and destroying it. It teaches the beauty of nature through a sighting at night. The shift in perspective is significant to understanding that technology advancements and progression in society doesn’t necessarily mean that one has to undermine nature.
The right side of my exhibition talks about appreciating nature as seen through the artworks, “A Butterfly’s Paradise,” “Water Lotus,” and “Autumn.” “A Butterfly’s Paradise” reveals the idea of mutual relationship between organisms and nature itself. Through this focus, it shows that nature isn’t hindered by technological advancements as the organisms still go about their daily lives. This is the true beauty of nature. “Water Lotus” expresses the freedom in nature and how away from society, it can thrive. “Autumn” finally portrays awe and wonder of nature that one can see in their everyday life. The three pieces represent pure nature that hasn’t been touched by mankind. They are at its truest state and this symbolizes just how precious the sceneries are.
The simple things in nature make up for the beautiful sights that people often neglect but through this exhibition, I intend for the audience to be more appreciative of nature and work to build a better society in which nature can coexist with mankind mutually. I hope that in the future, we will work to preserve nature and feel a sense of freedom through what nature has to offer as it provides a relaxing feeling. In addition, we should consider the effects that technology has on nature and be mindful while implementing them, making sure we are not destroying nature in the process. Lastly, I believe beauty of nature comes in the form of many things so we should stop and observe our surroundings, and admire what we are given.
